This is going to be a lighting challenge. Isn't photography all about light!
The main light source should be to the left or right of the subject(s)/scene. Ambient light could be present but should not overpower the main light source. Light source could be natural or artificial.
Side lighting can be used effectively to enhance mood, bring out textures and/or create interesting shadow play.
Sooooo, its show time folks!

This tired dork is a colleague of mine and a real sweet guy. The posture is awful, just uploading so I'll have something to delete later on. Not sure about the main angle of light here, but at least it has shadows! :)

I wasn't sure about this at first glance but coming back to it now I can appreciate you have taken a really nice shot.

I like the position of the man, sligthly tilted. Adds a more natural look. Daniel.

Enest and Helen: Thank you very much, you're too kind :) (Did anyone notice the thumbnail looks like a pic of giant rabbit..)

A very thought-provoking image, Kiki. Beautifully captured and presented.

Hi Kiki. no delete here. this is a keeper. Great B/W conversion, great tones & good shadows. well done.

Thank you, Brent. I thought you found it terrible, I see all kinds of flaws here myself. Darkened too heavily, scratch marks on his nose, right wing of the nose gone missing, nose looks sharper than his eyes.. etc. Well. It's certainly more than a lunchtime snap... exactly 12 hours more ;)

I know I commented on this earlier Kiki and I guess I must have hit the wrong button to post. Great image and a definite keeper. Very nicely done.

Thank you, guys :) Debi: Goodies, I'll feel I have some credit for if it it does well, and can blame it all on you if it doesn't :) Tom: Not posed, not candid. I've known the 'model' for ages. A good sport, very relaxed type and fine with me snapping away. I think he mostly tries to ignore my smalltalk.

Nicely done Kiki. I like John's description but seems a bit more noirish to me. Was it posed or candid, not that it makes a difference except if it was posed, it shows that you are serious about this stuff instead of just dilettantes like most of us (except maybe Debi).

on the other hand, the hair looks good from this angle and it helps with the light part of the challenge so if you're planning on using him as a model for any more pictures during this challenge, ask him to wait.

Thank you, all. And lol to John.. good imagination. He does have a certain barfly look.. I'll tell him it's time for a haircut!

This shot brings more Disco 70's to mind than the 50's. You know the ones where the lounge lizards sitting at the bar lean over to tell you something ... "Its your mother calling" ... except we didn't have cells back then. I'm sure that he is nothing like this ... but this shot is evocative.

Great shot Kiki. Like the light, the tilt of the face and the lines on his fore. BW works very well for this. - RK

There's nothing awful about the posture Kiki. I like the inquisitive look here for being different then the ordinary. Definetly not delete material. -Doug

Good portrait Kiki - that 'film" slider worked great as did the nifty 50! :-)

Thank you, guys! :) (And darn you.. with comments like that I can't very well delete this again.) Rod: Most is due to the cheap 50mm, but I did use the PS "film look" slider ;) Glad you noticed.

Bugger off Kiki this is a terrific picy, it seems very sharp & soft at the same time. It's very film looking I think Ilford Pan. The posture looks different but I think that helps it work over a more cheesy pose a. Nicely done Mon Petit.
