I'm glad some found the shadows as interesting (and appropriate) as I did. If not, hey, that's okay too.
Thanks for commenting.

This picture is all about the shadows for me and how they add interest in such a positive way. Without the side lighting those shadows aren't there but I still see John's point. -Doug

Maybe a little too cluttered for me to be settled but there is a very curious aspect to this image and the strange shadow.

thanks for the comments. Daniel, I don't live in New York City, but I work there and shoot there most of the time.

Don't know how you captured it, but a fascinating image well seen and captured.

I see here several interesting things that call my attention, not only a shadow. What part of the world are you Penny, what season?. I am in Argentina, so I had to wait until 6 PM to get such a natural lighting from the side (and I am very impatient). Daniel.

Hi Penny. Interesting shadow, at first one can not guess the light direction to cast the shadow, well done & theme perfect as well.

thanks for the comments -
John, I guess the difference for me is that I see the shadows that the light creates as just important as the subjects the light might shine on so, even though this challenge is called side lighting, I feel that the shadows are also on topic.
Everyone is entitled to an opinion though.

Well I'm buggered I can see the feet now & it all makes sense as he's just completely hidden by the other bloke a.

I was wrong. The shadows are wonderful but this challenge is about the light and how side lighting illuminates its subjects differently than other light ... not shadows. So the leaves, some part of their faces and scaffolding itself is in the challenge and the interesting other stuff is extra ... but the picture can't be about the extra. Your Empire State Building is a very good representative of this. That is why I pulled the Sidewalk with Crepe Myrtles ... I made it too much about the fence and their shadows behind when I should have focused on just them.

Just kidding about the cloning! ;-) I much prefer the one in the drop box, maybe just crop off the bottom plank? ;-)
Rod, either he's a vampire or his shadow is hidden - I like the idea of a vampire myself. :-)

Rod - Maybe he's a non person, but then why are there two sets of feet in the shadow?
Carole - My cloning skills are okay but then I loose one of my subjects.
RK - It's already a crop but I could do a closer crop (in fact, I think I'll put one in the drop box)
John - look againat the shadows.

The shadow looks awesome a but I can't figure out how there's no shadow of the other bloke. Maybe he's a non person:-) Nicely done Penny.

I love the shadow on the wall of the one fellow but wish the guy on the left wasn't there. How are your cloning skills???!!! ;-)

Two men - one shadow. First impressions... find it bit too busy... need to come back for another look.

Cute. But wasn't that a different challenge? I think the men themselves aren't enhanced by side lighting but the crop of just the bottom right quadrant scaffolding (maybe up to the rail with the shadow's hand) certainly is. It would make an interesting entry. Put the fuller version in the drop box for comparison. If you included blue-hood guy's feet we would be wondering where is his shadow.
